Rules for Volunteers
We welcome you, children, teens, young adults and seniors
to help bring love and laughter to our elderly and sick residents.
You are special when you bring encouragement to these easily
forgotten, sometimes sweet and pleasant, sometimes talkative
and aggressive, and sometimes silent aged folks. They were
once young, vibrant & independent. Now they need assistance
with the daily activities of living. These elderly residents
suffer from illnesses of dementia, schizophrenia, cancer,
stroke and diabetes.
* HOW TO HELP *
Be a friend
Talk. Tell them a little about yourself and let them tell
you their stories. Happy memories are to be treasured &
shared. Residents can also be confused and easily forgetful.
Be sensible
Avoid making promises you cannot keep. Just humour them. Be
entertaining: It is OK to make joyful noises. You can sing,
dance and play musical instruments.
Be involved
Play "games" eg. cards / passing the ball.
Be respectful
Laugh with them but do not laugh at their mannerisms.
Be careful
To help move those in wheelchairs, make sure the resident
sits upright and is belted. Both feet must be on the foot-
rests.
Be alert
Observe the very frail who can fall easily. When you interact
with them , watch out for any signs of discomfort or distress.
Be concerned
Check with the nurse on how to assist in serving the residents.
Diabetic patients cannot take sweet things and others are
prone to choking.
Bring small gifts
Suitable treats! Not money!!
Be civic minded
Keep the environment clean.
